- "Summer holidays!! great!!", Mary exclaimed. - "What are you going to do?", asked Sue. - "I don't know, and you?, said Mary - "I'm going to a scout summer camp", Sue answered. - "..a scout summer camp, what's that?" asked Mary. -"Have you ever heard of Robert Baden-Powell?", Sue asked - "No, I haven't", Mary answered. - "Well, he was the founder of the scout movement", Sue said. - "Really?", Mary said. - " Well, he was a famous soldier. He was interested in education. He wrote a book called "Scouting For Boys".", Sue said. The book was about: - Children and young people working together - Learning through doing - Being self-sufficient - Doing good (being kind and useful) Today thousands of young people in many countries are scouts. Scouts usually wear a uniform. They meet each week to participate in various activities. Each scout troop consists of patrols with 6-8 scouts in each and a patrol leader. The leader of the whole scout troop is called the scout master. Typical activities include outdoor activities such as camp craft and survival skills, tying knots, map reading, orienteering, hiking, climbing, canoeing, sailing and many other sports. Other activities include cooking, singing, learning about local history and concerns about the wider world. If scouts learn enough about a subject they may gain an award and receive a badge Scouts also organise and take part in fund-raising events for charities. Being a scout is about being a good citizen.
