BONFIRE  NIGHT

Yesterday, on the 5th November, we had  Bonfire Night in England.

Bonfire Night celebrates the failure of a plot to blow up the government in London in 1605 by a man called Guy Fawkes.

In England we celebrate this night with bonfires, with “Guy Fawkes” on fireworks displays, eating bonfire toffees, toffee apples and baked potatoes.

Children sometimes make “guys” and use them to beg for  money with the chant “Penny for the Guy”.

There is a popular chant from England:

“In this nursery rhyme,

the Gunpowder Plot is introduced:

Remember, remember, the fifth of November,

Gunpowder, treason and plot;

We see no reason,

Why gunpowder treason,

Should ever be forgot!”

Another rhyme:

“Guy, Guy, Guy, Stick him up on high;

Hang him on a lamp post,

And leave him there to die;

Ladies and gentlemen you’ll never grow fat;

If you don’t put a penny in the old Guy’s hat.”

Glossary:

Gunpowder: pólvora

Treason: traición

Plot: complot, conspiración
